Speakers

Prof. Dr. Danny Hughes
KU Leuven, Belgium
Title: The State of The Art in Ultra Low Power Wireless Systems
In this keynote presentation, Dr. Hughes will discuss the state of the art in ultra-low power wireless systems; the limits of batteries as a power storage medium and the potential of energy harvesting in combination with novel charge storage technologies to revolutionise the field of low power electronics. The presentation will be illustrated throughout with real-world examples of battery-free and energy-harvesting systems that are already moving out of the lab and into challenging real-world application cases.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Danny Hughes is a Professor at the Department of Computer Science of KU Leuven (Belgium), where he is a member of the DistriNet (Distributed Systems and Computer Networks) research group and leads the Networked Embedded Software taskforce.
Dr. Hughes has a PhD from Lancaster University (UK) and has since worked as a Visiting Scholar with the University of California at Berkeley (USA), a Visiting Scholar with the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) and as a Lecturer with Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (China). His PhD focused on Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems and his current research is on the Internet of Things (IoT).
Dr. Hughes is a serial entrepreneur and has founded three spin-off companies to commercialise academic research in the areas of Distributed Systems, the Internet of Things and Energy Harvesting.

Title: Modelling and Model Use: Does it Matter and is it Relevant to Ambient Systems
Ambient systems are permeating our environments, continuously sensing, guessing, reasoning and responding with digitised interventions that aim to make our lives more efficient. Are we aware of how reliant we are or are becoming on these digital systems? Are we building more and more momentum in the journey down one path in a way that does not allow us to stop, look around and reflect on whether we are still moving towards our desired destination? In this presentation, I consider why we build models and share some progress we made to close the gap between what we model and measure. The context of this talk is vehicle emissions. Now, one might argue and question the relevance of even considering emissions, especially those resulting from combustion, if the discourse is towards electrification of our fleets.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Joubert Johan W. Joubert recently joined KU Leuven as Professor in Operations Research for Logistics Planning, where his research focuses on developing decision-support systems. In his previous role as a full professor in the department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, University of Pretoria in South Africa, he started applying activity and agent-based models to capture, explain and imitate the urban freight stakeholders’ dynamic behaviour and interactions.
